捨て印で修正できない「重要部分」の代表例には、売買契約などで買い手が支払うべき金額の数字が挙げられる。

契約書の売買金額を変更する場合は、改めて当事者が話し合う機会を設け、旧金額を消した二重線の「上」に重ねて買い手の印鑑（訂正印）を押す。改ざんを極力防ぐための工夫だ。

その一方、単なる誤記（氏名の漢字を、戸籍の記載どおり旧字体に変えるなど）や、企業内規に基づく表記統一（例えば、住所の略式表記「1－3－5」を、「1丁目3番5号」と変えるなど）のための修正は、捨て印を使って十分に可能である。

ただ、金額という「契約内容の重要部分」について、例えばゼロが1つ多いなど、客観的に明らかな誤記の場合、捨て印で修正できるかどうかは微妙だ。

「最終的にはケースバイケース。事案ごとの背景を勘案したうえで裁判所は判断を行う。よって、事前の見切りが難しいグレーゾーンがどうしても残る」（同）

契約書に捨て印が押してあろうとなかろうと、契約の成否には影響しない。もし、後々のトラブルを避けるべく、細心の注意を払うなら「捨て印を押さない」「コピーで構わないので、契約書をお互いに一部ずつ持つ」ことを契約の条件に据えるのも有効な処置だろう。
